  39. USES
  40.  
  41.      Misoprostol is used to prevent stomach ulcers in people who are taking
  42. nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).  NSAIDs (such as aspirin,
  43. carprofen, diclofenac, diflunisal, fenoprofen, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen,
  44. indomethacin, ketoprofen, meclofenamate, mefenamic acid, naproxen,
  45. phenylbutazone, piroxicam, salsalate, sulindac, or tolmetin) are frequently
  46. prescribed to treat pain or arthritis.  NSAIDs have been shown to cause ulcers
  47. in some patients.  Misoprostol belongs to a group of chemicals called
  48. prostaglandins, which protect the stomach by decreasing the secretion of acid
  49. and increasing the secretion of mucus.
  50.  
  51. TREATMENT
  52.  
  53.      This medication should be taken with meals and at bedtime, unless
  54. otherwise directed by your doctor.
  55.      If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it
  56. is almost time for your next dose.  If that is the case, do not take the
  57. missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Never take a
  58. double dose.
  59.      Misoprostol treatment should continue for as long as you take a NSAID.
  60. This medication should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  61.  
  62. SIDE EFFECTS
  63.  
  64.      Minor.
  65.  
  66.      Abdominal pain, change in appetite, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence,
  67. gas and bloating, heartburn, menstrual cramps and abnormal bleeding, nausea,
  68. or vomiting.
  69.  
  70.      Major.
  71.  
  72.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  73. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT
  74. chest pain, difficulty in breathing, postmenopausal vaginal bleeding, or rash.
  75.  
  76. INTERACTIONS
  77.  
  78.      Antacids decrease the absorption of misoprostol into the bloodstream.
  79. However, antacids do not appear to decrease the beneficial effects of
  80. misoprostol in preventing ulcers.  Consult your doctor before using antacids
  81. with this product.
  82.      Before starting to take misoprostol, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  83. any other medications you are currently taking.
  84.  
  85. WARNINGS
  86.  
  87.      * Misoprostol should not be taken by anyone with a history of allergy to
  88. prostaglandins.
  89.      * Tell your doctor immediately if you develop a rash while taking this
  90. medication.
  91.      * Women should notify their doctors immediately if they experience any
  92. abnormal vaginal bleeding while taking this medication.
  93.      * Women of child-bearing age must use extreme caution not to become
  94. pregnant while taking misoprostol.  This medication may cause miscarriage.
  95. Miscarriages caused by misoprostol may be incomplete, which could lead to
  96. potentially dangerous bleeding.  ANY WOMAN WHO IS PREGNANT OR PLANS TO BECOME
  97. PREGNANT SHOULD NOT TAKE MISOPROSTOL.  If you are taking misoprostol and
  98. discover that you are pregnant, stop taking the drug immediately and call your
  99. doctor.
  100.      * Nursing mothers should not take misoprostol.  The body converts it to
  101. misoprostol acid, which can pass into breast milk and cause diarrhea in the
  102. nursing infant.
